_______________ Trewern Outdoor Education Centre

Trewern provides  a residential experience for our Key Stage 4 pupils and promotes experiential learning through a variety of educational experiences, in an environment that contrasts with their home area.

The centre is situated in beautiful countryside on the border between England and Wales, near the small market town of Hay-on-Wye. It has extensive grounds which offer potential for various activities, being close to the Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons and the River Wye.

The programs on offer are carefully tailored to meet the needs of pupils visiting the centre. However, to keep costs to a minimum, visitors are expected to assist with domestic chores such as setting and clearing tables, washing up and preparing packed lunches.
Safety is a prime consideration and Trewern operates within the rigorous standards laid down by the Adventure Activities Licencing Service. Qualified Teachers lead curricular sessions and all instructional staff hold a range of nationally recognised qualifications in outdoor activities.
Trewern is the ideal place to stay for our young people whether they want to scale the mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park, explore rivers by canoe, venture underground or simply enjoy a local walk, taking in some of the many bookshops in Hay-on-Wye.

The centre aims to:
  • promote a healthy lifestyle
  • project positive role models
  • broaden horizons
  • provide a safe haven for all children, especially those at risk or in crisis
  • provide an opportunity for learning, in a challenging environment
  • provide a stimulating environment that encourages self-expression and personal development
  • help pupils develop life skills and manage risk through responsible behaviour
  • embrace opportunities to work harmoniously with others
