During the Easter holidays, 22 lucky year 9 and 10 Geography students got to spend 4 days in Sorrento, Italy. Sorrento is a coastal town that overlooks the Bay of Naples.
On the first full day in Italy we visited Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. Although we could see Mount Vesuvius from the hotel this gave pupils a chance to walk to the top of the volcano and look into the crater. If pupils thought the walk up was bad, it was just as difficult walking back down. Once back down to earth, we then made the short journey to Pompeii. Before heading into the ancient, historic town we enjoyed some famous handmade pizza. Our trip to Pompeii allowed pupils to see the town which was once buried following an eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The evening then consisted of a rather competitive game of beach football or a refreshing dip in the sea.
The second day consisted of a trip to Solfatara which is the site of a former volcano. The smell of the sulphur was somewhat of a deterrent to the pupils. On this day we also visited an amphitheatre and other ancient ruins. In the evening pupils began to explore the beautiful town of Sorrento followed by more beach football and swimming in the sea.
On the final day in Italy we spent the morning in Sorrento where pupils hunted around for the best deals on the famous gelato, whilst others took the opportunity to explore and sightsee around the town. The afternoon was then spent having a guided tour of Naples before heading to the airport.
As well as all the famous landmarks and sites that were visited this was an excellent opportunity to enjoy copious amounts of pizza, pasta and ice cream. A very healthy way to round out the Easter holidays!
