At Riverside School on 22nd January 2016, Year 7 students are performing a mini musical about sustainability and resilience – surviving and thriving, regardless of the challenge – in collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation and the University of East London.
The musical ‘Shine’ is the culmination of a week of cross-curricular work in geography, art, history, civics, science and music. During the week the students will learn about the formation and burning of fossil fuels; the expansion of London during the industrial revolution; and the problems with infrastructure and community cohesion in their community today.
Act 1: a historical view of how we got where we are now.
Act 2: students will present the audience with the problems they worry about and some possible solutions.
The aim for the project is to provide students with the necessary knowledge of the status quo in order for them to engage in what their future will look like.
The musical is written by Beth Osnes (words), professor at Boulder University, Colorado, USA and Tom Wasinger (music). It is part of The 100 Resilient Cities initiative by the Rockefeller Foundation, that support sharing of problem solving solution between cities all over the globe. www.100resilientcities.org/.
