On Thursday 22nd May, Riverside were honoured to welcome Freddie Knoller, a 94 year old survivor from the Auschwitz prison camp during the second world war. Freddie’s story has become somewhat famous after he was interviewed by the BBC in January 2015 where he recounted remarkable stories of hardships, loss and enduring hope.
During his lecture, students and teachers alike were amazed at his story as he described his early life in Austria, to the time working undercover in Paris for the Nazi soldiers, to the time spent in Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen concentration camps. Students were deeply moved as they began to realise the extent of the horrors experienced during the holocaust.
Freddie articulated his story incredibly well, showing passion and energy that eclipsed that of the average 94 year old man. He emphasised the importance of family, love, democracy, freedom and the attitude to never, never give up, keeping a positive attitude always.
It was nothing short of a privilage to welcome Freddie to Riverside School and students were quick to buy his autobiography, ‘Living with the Enemy’ to find out more about his amazing story. Copies were also bought for the school library to allow everyone to read his tale.
On behalf of the school, we would like to thank Freddie from the bottom of our hearts for his story. We welcome him next year to speak to us once again.
