A member of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council from 1998 to 2001, Colin Pond was a longstanding member of the Labour Party and an active trade unionist who contributed enormously to the borough’s community. His work was governed by two main interests: education for young people on the one hand and, on the other, the town twinning arrangements between Witten and Barking and Dagenham. Before his death in 2001, after a two-year battle against cancer, Colin bequeathed his savings to a Trust Fund with the express aim of “helping young people in Barking and Dagenham and Witten to finance their continuing studies”. Since its inception, the Colin Pond Trust has helped countless young people, both here and in Witten, to continue their studies at post-16 and fulfil their aspirations.
The five highest performing year 12 students at GCSE each received a scholarship of £500 to help with their studies. The students were:
Farzana Noor
Rebecca Conforti
Laetitia Joymungul
Grace Maku
Hephzibah Olaleye
