An anxious yet excited Riverside year 8 Girls Handball team, in their new kit sponsored by Portakabin, travelled to Birmingham International Futsal Arena representing South East England in the England Handball National Schools Championship finals 2014. They ended their first National game with a very close victory over Swinton, 3-2. With a strong defensive line in the closing minutes of the game, Riverside School maintained their undefeated status from the earlier competitions. The girls were straight back on with an extremely important and highly competitive match against previous rivals Harris Academy. A win for the Harris Academy would have meant that they secured the national title, Riverside School therefore had 20 minutes to keep the national title hope alive. The girls opened the match with a goal scored by top goal scorer Andreya, Harris Academy scored soon after. The game continued this way until the score reached 5-5. Riverside kept their composure and netted two goals within the final two minutes of the match. With 30 minutes to refocus the girls went into their last match needing to win or draw to become national champions. TTen minutes into the game Great Sankley were ahead 2-1. This caused Miss Bryan to give some motivational words from the side line which led to 3 goals in quick succession. With five minutes remaining a tactical call was made from the side-line and the girls reverted to a defensive style of play. This led to any shots made by Great Sankley to be comfortably saved by Zuwena, who was a fantastic asset to the team all tournament. With no more goals conceded the final score was 4-2. Riverside lifted the trophy and became U13 Handball National Champions 2014.
A huge congratulations to all of the squad members:
